The great tradition and legacy of Arabic calligraphy, and the wide gap in type-related terminology between the Arabic language and other languages open an exciting opportunity to translate typographic terms into Arabic and to bring forth the aesthetic principles of Arabic calligraphy into English. This presents a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the beauty of form and function and to expand the principles of type design with the unique ideologies that form the basis of the many styles of Arabic calligraphy. It’s an opportunity to return to a past that is steeped in tradition, in order to learn and bring into the present and future the principles and ideologies of Arabic letterforms into contemporary design practice. The aim is to be able to speak equally eloquently in Arabic and English about Arabic type and typography, to be able to express the many nuances of their aesthetic qualities as well as the technologies of contemporary design. It’s a living project, in dialogue between part present and future, and will continuously evolve as the researchers delve into the source material.
Why an Arabic type dictionary?
This initiative is important in order to satisfy the needs of design publishing in Arabic, and in order to be able to speak to our legacy and culture, to tell our story. This project is also crucial in the education of next generations of Arab designers, where the absence of published resources in this topic reveals the under-privileged nature of our field, of being able to speak about type and typography in Arabic. This project is targeted towards designers, educators, and practitioners who are operating in this field and would like to be able to communicate in Arabic.
The scientific committee
This project is led by members of the scientific committee which includes Dr. Bahia Shehab, Dr. Nadine Chahine, Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, Samir Sayegh, Yara Khoury Nammour, Najla Badran, and Kamal Mansour, who collectively bring extensive expertise in typography, design, and Arabic visual culture.
The project is initiated by Dr. Bahia Shehab and the TypeLab at the American University of Cairo.
إن الإرث العريق للخط العربي، والفراغ الواسع بين المصطلحات التيبوغرافية في اللغة العربية واللغات الأخرى، يبرز فرصةً واعدةً لترجمة المصطلحات التيبوغرافية إلى العربية، ولاستحضار المبادئ الجمالية للخط العربي الى اللغة الإنجليزية. وهذا يُمثل فرصةً فريدةً لسد الفراغ بين جمال الشكل والوظيفة من جهة، ولتوسيع نطاق مبادئ التصميم التيبوغرافي من خلال دراسة الأيديولوجيات الفريدة التي تُشكل أساس أنماط الخط العربي المتعددة. إنها فرصةٌ للعودة إلى ماضٍ عريق، من أجل تعلم مبادئ وأيديولوجيات أشكال الحروف العربية، ونقلها إلى الحاضر والمستقبل. الهدف هو التمكن من التحدث ببلاغةٍ متساويةٍ باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية عن التيبوغرافية العربية، والتعبير عن الفروق الدقيقة في خصائصها الجمالية بالاجمال، وتقنيات التصميم المعاصر بشكل خاص. إنه مشروعٌ حيّ، في حوارٍ دائم بين الحاضر والمستقبل، وسيتطور باستمرارٍ مع تعمق الباحثين في المواد المصدرية

هذه المبادرة مهمة لتلبية احتياجات نشر مراجع التصميم باللغة العربية، وللتواصل مع تراثنا وثقافتنا. كما يُعد هذا المشروع بالغ الأهمية في تعليم الأجيال القادمة من المصممين العرب، حيث يكشف غياب الموارد المنشورة في هذا المجال عن قلة فرص التحدث عن التيبوغرافية باللغة العربية. والهدف من هذا المشروع هو دعم المصممين والمعلمين والممارسين العاملين في هذا المجال، والذين يرغبون في التواصل باللغة العربية
